2012 Shanghai CMEF: The Debut of EmssRobot's First-Generation Stair-Climbing Wheelchair

In Shanghai in 2012, the late spring breeze still carried the lively atmosphere unique to exhibitions. At the 67th China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF), under the blue tent of Zhangjiagang Renhe Medical Equipment Co., Ltd., a group of people gathered around a yellow and black device – the first public appearance of EmssRobot's first-generation stair-climbing wheelchair, marking a significant step forward for China's independently developed assistive mobile devices on the world stage.

Initial Aspiration: Making Climbing Stairs Easier for People with Mobility Disabilities

At that time, most people with mobility impairments in China were still hampered by "staircase barriers": old residential areas lacked elevators, and steps in public places blocked their access, firmly limiting wheelchair users' movement to flat ground. With the initial aspiration of "enabling every wheelchair user to freely traverse steps," the EmssRobot team spent several years refining its first-generation stair-climbing wheelchair.

This device features a tracked stair-climbing structure, allowing it to smoothly climb standard stair steps while retaining the flexibility of pushing it on flat ground. It solves the core pain point of going up and down stairs while also ensuring convenience for daily use. At the 2012 CMEF exhibition, it was one of the few intelligent assistive mobile devices independently developed by a Chinese team, attracting the attention of domestic and international customers upon its debut.

Exhibition Scene: "Chinese Power" Overcoming Obstacles

In the photo, members of the EmssRobot team stand side-by-side with overseas customers, their faces beaming with confidence. The words "Zhangjiagang Renhe Medical Equipment Co., Ltd." are clearly visible on the tent, while the yellow and black stair-climbing wheelchair in the center is the focus of the exhibition.

Technical Demonstration: The team demonstrated the wheelchair's stair-climbing, flat-ground turning, and emergency braking functions on-site. The smooth operation and stable performance drew frequent nods of approval from many users and visitors.

International Attention: Customers from Europe and Southeast Asia proactively inquired about the device, showing great interest in its practicality and cost-effectiveness. This laid the groundwork for EmssRobot's subsequent expansion into overseas markets.

Industry Recognition: As one of the few mass-produced stair-climbing wheelchairs in China at the time, its emergence filled a market gap and showcased the innovative potential of China's rehabilitation aids industry.

Looking Back: A Decade-Long Journey Starting from CMEF

CMEF in 2012 marked the beginning of EmssRobot's story. From the initial debut of the first-generation stair-climbing wheelchair to subsequent iterations that resulted in lighter and smarter models, and now as a benchmark brand in China's stair-climbing wheelchair industry, this yellow and black device has witnessed the transformation of China's rehabilitation aids industry from "following" to "running alongside."

It's not just a product, but a promise: to empower every person with mobility impairments with the courage and ability to overcome obstacles and embrace a broader life.
